A Calling Card for Friendship
When I was a kid growing up in Colorado I had this tape of field recordings that were made around the state between 1982 and 1987. Here a few of my favorite recordings from the album in the order they appear on this episode:
Flag Song-Denver Dakota Singers
Dancin Doll-Bud Bartram
Letter From Home-Bud Bartram
Pork Chops (Some of What You’re Sittin’ On)-Millie Castine
In the Shade of a Tree-Ed Carpenter
Bag Balm-J. May
El Mariachi Nuevo- Aztlanel Cofrecito

Re-Neavus
I lent my friend Moose a tape recorder and he returned it with a tape full of interviews. One of those interviews was with Herbie, an artist who collaborated with a couple of friends on a sculpture titled Re-Neavus. I cut it up (the tape not the sculpture) and added some music by Barin Darnew.

The Flaneur
I recently had the pleasure of taking the True/False Film Festival’s Speculative Stroll, a walking tour of Columbia, Missouri. One of the tour guides was Speed Levitch. You may recognize Speed’s voice from the film Waking Life or the fantabulous documentary, The Cruise. These are some highlights from The Stroll.

Gainsborough Creek by Luke Cumberland
Luke Cumberland is a second-year student in the MFA writing program at Washington University. He is editor of the anthology “Faces of Virginia Poetry.” His most recent poetry has been published on StatusHat.org. He is from Virginia; he lives in St. Louis and he has never lost an arm wrestling match in his life.

Candy’s Hair Affair
I found this recording in a box of old tapes. The tape wasn’t labeled but I think it was recorded at a beauty school somewhere near New Orleans. It’s one of my all-time favorite pieces of found tape.

Fifty Miles from Tonapah
Nason Smith’s nonfiction has appeared on NPR: Hearing Voices and his fiction has been published in The Pinch. He lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
